Things I Need to Know

I read about three important things that UMF Secondary Education majors should know.

-The Center for Human Development has resources that can help me prepare for the Praxis 1 tests. They can also assist with registration.

-Practicum students can only enroll in one other class during that semester. It is suggested that when working on a schedule, you should only work after 2:30, and on weekends.

-You must pass all 3 Praxis 1 tests in order to transfer in the Secondary Education major.

Go to the Kalikow Center and look at the Educational Technology. Include low-tech items such as writing aids. Find three items to use in your classroom. Why?

-Assistive Technology Software, tons of various uses.

-Doves, helps kids with low motor skills.

-Thick writing utensils, same as above.

Go to the juvenile library in the Kalikow Center in the Education Center and identify five books you could use in your content area.

Becoming a Teacher

Joy of Teaching


Parts that brought joy

-The very first paragraph of the chapter talks about needing to help students learn in different ways. This brings joy to me because it gives the idea that teaching will always be changing. Teaching is not a boring profession.

-Teaching is a rewarding work to go in to. Most teachers gain a great amount of happiness from seeing their students succeed and learn new things. For me this is the most important facet of teaching.

-Teacher shortages seem to be common throughout the country. This means that there is some degree of job security, even if it is not the ideal, perfect position in a certain district, finding a job should not be a huge issue.



Non-joyful parts

-The book proclaims that many secondary teachers have chosen to teach because they love the subject. To me teaching needs to be more about expanding the knowledge of the student more than being able to practice one’s prowess over a certain discipline.

-The book explains that for many teachers, opportunities for advancement, and salary are not high in importance for many teachers. This should not be this way, the profession would attract many more capable people if the pay was better.

-Licensure and standards can be a less joyful part of teaching. The government bureaucracy can be a strain on teachers. Sometimes teachers are forced to alter their methods and content in order to pass standards, even if it may be detrimental to students.
